A Study on Operation Public Health Nursing Practice Course in Basic Nursing Program

Abstract
A study on operation of PHN practice course in basic nursing program was conducted for 13 schools of nursing in Seoul during the month of September 1971. Interviewing method was used for collection of necessory information.
The following results were obtained;
1. Joint system of health center and school staff was employed by majority of schools for evalution of students field practice.
2. Approximately two thrid of school marked grade for PHN field practice in academic record.
This marking system may be revelina the unreadness for PHN as an independent clinical specialty.
3. The most schools were not suffietly equipped with clinical instruments for PHN service except a few nursing bags although one third of school surveyed showed utilization of equipments by group of students.
4. over 50% schools surveyed that no text.book was used for PHN theory course.
5. Clinical practice for psychiatric nursing appeared to be more important subject area than public health nursing course in terms of budgetory all cation for field expense as it took nearly one third of total amount appropriated for all clinical practice. sustification for comparing PHN with psychiatric nursing was that two courses are having common problem of dependency on outside hospital and both are the subjects of national board for nurses licensing examination.
6. For the public health nursing field instruction: none of schools showed full time field instructor stationed with students while other clinical instructors are stationed at the fieldclinical institution either at full time or part time base. this also reveal the degree of importance between PHN and other area.
The following recommendations are made and drawn from the study results:
1. Administrative agreement between teaching instution and appropriate health agency for PHN field experience should be sought before the program immplementation.
2. The field instructor should be disptched to health agency where students are practiced at either full time or part time or part time base. for clincical supervision.
3. Budget allocation for PHN field practice as well as laboratory facilities should be improved to the equivalent level with other similar courses for effective field instruction.
In concluding words better curriculm organization for basic nursing program are recommended through the organized efforts of nursing educators in all specialies concerned.
